Notes from David Kennington Founder Director of Romanian Charity

“Challenge Camp Romania”

1. May I explain that in Ceausescu dictatorship all information was censured and the Romanian public were told that they were the only Country with handicapped people, and it was a disgrace. So the handicapped children were put in hospital surrounded by high walls and secret, and it was only after the revolution that this came out.

2. Women married or not at age 25 were expected to have five children. Obviously, some families could not afford to keep them, so they either had them committed or they got them into an orphanage.

3. Helen was assistant secretary, and then she has been secretary for the last year. It was felt that, to help her with her duties for the benefit of the charity, she was made Vice President, so as to give her more authority when dealing with the different government departments.

4. We would dearly like to help all these institutions. We can and will in some ways, BUT the big problem is transport and storage. Transport being expensive and storage of large items very difficult
