Chief Executives Yearly Report 2005

Unbelievably this was our fifteenth year. We started as a one off and here we are fifteen years on with a Romanian Charity with its own permanent campsite. A great tribute to all the founder members.

The new generator building is nearly finished and the floor of the wet weather/activity building has been tiled. Unfortunately when we applied for authorisation to the health dept they once again said they had no guidelines for our activity and could not give us approval for institutionalised children. They suggested we build wooden triangular huts, which would then allow them to class it as a public campsite, but this was only a suggestion!

Due to other world disasters this year obviously our fund raising suffered. So it was decided to have only a three-week camp this year. The first week of the camp to be off site at the hospital at Sasca, which was organised, and run by Helen Vladuic as Camp Chief. This was very successful with a team of ten English and ten Romanian. Back to Zamostea on the Sunday was our annual local children’s fun day “Aspasia’s Day” followed by the second week with 30 fit enough from Sasca. Then the third week and last week partly on camp and when the weather was bad, at the hospital at Siret.

This year we took a step forward towards handing over with Helen taking on Camp Chief with Roy being there for the last two weeks to overlook everything.

The cost of the buildings they require would be £5000+ and then we would have no guarantee.

Once again Heather Johnson ran the annual “Anglesey for Romania” walk and raised £730. The Casino this year made £11,500 for our funds but we did not have one for our own funds. “Thursday’s Child” raised £1,399. Of which £375 was given to “O Nou Viata” (Romanian Challenge Appeal’s Romanian Charity), £375 was given to Challenge Camp Romania (our Romanian Charity, towards the camp itself). £375 to us to help towards the cost of the campsite and £110 was given out as grants to deserving causes in Romania (orphanage parties ect.) “Sponsor a Child” this year raised £1,012 toward the cost of the camp.

We had to hire a wagon this year at a cost of £1,600 to take the equipment out. Helen Vladuic (Vice President Challenge Camp Romania) finished her final year at University doing child Psychology in August and finished with very high results. Her fees for this were partly financed by “Thursday’s Child” and partly by us. She is now doing her masters part time and also a part time practical course at her own cost as well as doing the administration for the charity. She had to go into hospital in Bucharest in October for three weeks to have her Gall bladder removed, but is Ok now.

The biggest priority this year is to get the authorisation problem solved and to have the road repaired. With all the rain, a lot of it has been washed away and it is difficult to get a vehicle to the site. Once this has been done, then we can go ahead.

I would also like to thank all those who have supported us over the last 14 years, in particular the trustees, the Casino team and the recycling team, for all their time, encouragement and work.

THANK YOU ALL

David Kennington MBE

Chief Executive
