Fact Sheet 2001

2001 March

We invited Elena Vladiuc on a fact finding and public relations visit, when she gave talks, helped as a croupier on our Fun Casinos and met the members of this year’s team going to Romania in July.

Alex has reorganised the toilet facilities, putting toilets and wash place on the children's camping field, converting the existing toilets and showers into toilets, and showers and wash places for adults.

This was hoped to resolve the water shortage problem. Which it did up to a point, but we still had to buy in water.

We were also made aware that we cannot take food into Romania, and also there is now a toll charge for passing through Hungary. This means we will have to buy all our food in Romania, and we cannot take donated food for the camp. This will make a further load on our finances.

2001 May

The team from Southern Trent Water installed the pump and piping into the Medical centre at Zamostea and the centre now has running water for the first time in 12 years a great achievement and benefit to people of Zamostea and the surrounding villages.

July 2001

We have now got official approval from the Health Department, Protection of Children Department, and all the necessary planning permission.

This year we had a British team of 18 and a Romanian team of 25

Also, this year we went a step further, with the Romanians taking over running the camp and team leaders all being Romanians.

The first week this year we had the children from what was the Girls' Home at Gura Humorilui,

which included 30 boys who have moved there from the Boys' Home at Siret. (The Boys' Home having now closed down)

This was followed by a week with the handicapped children from Siret and Sosca.

Following this we had a week with the poor children from Suceava. 30 chosen by the local priest came from South Suceava and 30 children chosen by a social worker came from North Suceava.

Some of the British team were surprised to find the children quite well dressed and with money in their pockets. It was explained to us that the reason for this was the Romanians are proud people and would not want there children to come on camp poorly dressed, also, if necessary, they would borrow from family and friends to make sure their children had pocket money.

The last week, which was to have been the Boys' Home from Siret week, we had children from two Orphanages in Suceava (30 of which originally came from the Boys' Home).

Altogether this was another successful camp giving the children an excellent holiday.

Targets for next year

This year, after experiencing a bad storm once again, when the children had to be moved into the store for the night, it has become more urgent to erect a wet weather/activity building. Outline plans have been drawn up and permission granted, all that is required is the finances to do it. We estimate about all told about £16000-18000.

Unfortunately this year we had problems with the generators but fortunately Alex managed to get one working, But for how long. Unfortunately we shall have to look for another generator. This one is 25yrs old so it has done good service as it has run for us for 10yrs.

It is envisaged the floors of the building being concrete with the floor of the wet weather shelter being wood, so if necessary, the children can sleep there in an emergency.

We also need to erect a tentage and activity equipment store, thereby creating more space for an additional food store, as the Health Department this year have said this has to be done by next year. Also, two storage rooms for goods on arrival from the UK, to be distributed where and when needed.

This can be done at a minimal cost. We Hope

Altogether this was another successful camp giving the children an excellent holiday.
