2000 February
We have a great shock. Whilst helping as a voluntary croupier, our Chairman from the formation of our charity was taken ill and died.
A great loss to us of a great supporter. Donation in memory of him total £1000 were received and will be used in the building of a wet weather shelter at Zamostea and dedicated to him.
2000 July
Our tenth camp. This year we have a team of only twelve English persons, but we have a picked team of Romanians. This year our main problem is getting through customs. Unfortunately conditions have changed which we were not fully aware of and our transport was delayed three days at the border. Which meant instead of arriving at Suceava customs on Thursday it did not arrive until Saturday by which time the customs was closed and it did not clear until Monday 5:00pm. As the camp started on Monday morning with 103 children plus staff we had a few problems, but fortunately we had arranged to buy a lot of the food in Romania so the problem was not as great as it could have been.
2000 October
Unfortunately, the President of our (Romanian side) charity Challenge Camp Romania, Mrs Janneta Nita and our Secretary Mrs Gabi Dreana, have decided they would like to relinquish their positions, but would like to carry on working with the charity. For the interim period Monica McDaid has agreed to stand in for me, with Alex Handrache as our Vice President. (See May 93 Alex the forester)
We now have a paid Secretary in Romania Miss Elena (Helen) Vladiuc. She has been on camp for the last six years, and has done the official paper work for the camp for the last two years. She has studied social work and hopes to go to University to study Psychology with a view to being a child Psychologist to work with charity work.
Two years ago we promised the Medical centre at Zamostea that if they got voluntary workers to dig a well we would repair the pipe work. As far as we knew nothing had happened so we scrapped the idea, but when I was there in October I found the well had been dug. Fortunately, Southern Trent water was going in November and has promised to assess what is required with a view to it being done next year.
Everyone connected with our charity are volunteers and none are paid for their services.
