1996 May

I go to Romania to get permission from the various Directors of the Orphanages and Hospital for the children to come to this years camp, and manage to arrange for 120 girls from a Girls Orphanage to come for a week, and once again 98 Boys from the Boys’ Home, plus 24 children from another children’s hospital and approximately 450 children from the hospital in Siret for a further week.

A group from the Boys’ home, under the direction of the past Director of the Home, formed a folk group and won the National contest in Constanta last year and came back to the camp when the boys were there and the girls sent back for their national costumes and gave a very entertaining evening.

Because this is to be a permanent camp for the use of children we have to come up to certain regulations, Health and Fire. The kitchen has had to be knocked down and rebuilt, because under the regulations it has to be fully enclosed. As it is a wood-burning stove and gets very hot, the roof has to be higher, and also, as it is attached to the building, which is half wood, it has to be fire retardant. They have given us the OK until September this year, and most of the conditions will be filled before the camp in July. Though the regulations are difficult are for us, I must say I agree with them if it is for the heath and safety of children. (Whilst this may on the surface seem a small thing, it is in itself a great step forward; it clearly shows that things are improving in Romania)

Our Romanian President’s Company has rebuilt the kitchen, tiled it and modified it at their cost (approx. £2.500) and Alex has upgraded the stove.

We had hoped in May this year to refurbish the Medical Centre in the village, but owing to circumstances beyond our control that has been left until the Autumn, although we have sent most of the materials needed over there
