1991 Feb
The idea being that after watching the Anneka Rice - Challenge Anneka in Romania, the then District Chairman of Fylde District Scout Council and his wife thought as an international youth movement, we as Scouts, could help children in need of aid, greater than ours.
1991 May
A joint Gang Show with Fylde, Blackpool and Wyre Gang Shows was held to raise money to support this need in some way. A total of £1,600 was raised to support our first camp.
After discussion it was decided to look into the feasibility of taking the children to camp in their own country, as it was felt we had the expertise, and would benefit more children, and the trauma of changing their environment would be easier.
A party of three went to Romania to see if this was possible. It was agreed that it was possible, and the Romanian Challenge Camp was formed as a section of Fylde District Scout Council.
1991 Sept
After much scrounging and with the help of Pandoro Fleetwood, a camp, of two weeks for 150 Boys from the Boys’ Home (Cassa de Copii) and a day out for the children from the hospital at Siret, at a camp site situated close to the forest near the village of Zamostea, North Eastern Romania, a holiday camp was held.
Thirty-eight people attended, mainly Scouts and Guides, and with the help of the charity Romanian Challenge Appeal a very successful camp was held. The team decided that although this was only supposed to be a one-off, after seeing the joy on the children’s faces and the sadness when we came to leave, that we HAD to come again
